Since we focus on schools in Sri Lanka to make school time table we have to consider some constraints. This system is a combination of both hard constraints and soft constraints. Those are,
Hard
constraints
- At any period, each subject can be taught by only one teacher.
- At any period, a teacher can teach at most one subject
Soft
constraints
- If teacher taking 2 classes of same subject to be scheduled in consecutive periods.
- A group of teachers can’t be attend to only one class.
Other areas that we should consider are,
- The time table should create in order to cover the syllabus
- No of teachers available in the school
- No of subjects in school
- No of classes in school
- No of periods to cover within a week for a subject
- Maximum no of periods a teacher can conduct
- First period is allocate for the class teacher
- The time duration for a period is 40 minutes
- For grade 6 to 11, Main subjects like math, science, English, and Sinhala periods are available in every day and other subjects are allocate as two periods per week
- When it comes to teachers time table we have to consider about
- last year class
- teachers experiences
- teachers interest
- In O/L classes teacher should teach at least 33 periods per week and In A/L classes 31 periods per week
- Every class should have a library period for their reading purposes.
- An ICT period is allocated to grade 6, 7, 8, 9 classes for a week
- 3 periods are allocated for a basket subjects per a week, as
- one double period
- single period
- There should be only one double period for a particular day for grade 6 to 11 classes
